The European University Institute (EUI) prepares researchers for developing and defending a doctoral thesis. 160 research grants are awarded annually by the EU Member States and other European national authorities to successful candidates.
Year 1: Acquire a solid background for the doctoral work; set out the proposed research.
Years 2 and 3: Research, field work, data collection, writing of the thesis under close supervision.
Year 4: Writing up and preparation for the defence of the thesis. Part of the year may be used for professional or university traineeships or teaching opportunities.
A Ph.D. from the European University Institute is an internationally recognised qualification.
